Calcutta, India
India
is a great but very different country. In this environment, Kolkata is
particularly special because it is normally not the preferred destination of
tourists and is not as developed as Delhi or Mumbai. However, without
exception, people were super friendly and helpful, inside and outside campus
but do not expect an “Erasmus Life” here. Communication in English normally
works very well.
Courses
·
Global Strategic Management (Prof.
Ray): professor is expert in his field with extensive experience; cases and
mandatory readings every class
·
Operations Strategy (Prof. Datta):
lecture is not very entertaining; mandatory readings every week (tested via
quizzes)
·
Financial Risk Management (Prof.
Mukher): professor is a very bad lecturer; interesting topic; low workload
·
Business Process Management (Prof.
Sen): good balance between lectures, case studies and guest speakers; very
practical/technical course; good professor; fair workload
·
Consumption, Culture & Markets
(Prof. Thakur): not recommendable course; topic is interesting, some readings
are good BUT professor is very unstructured and confused; most of the lecture
time is wasted; low workload
Housing
Students
live on campus in 12m² rooms with basic furniture and canteen close
University
The
IIMC campus is very nice and green and offers a pool house and sports
facilities. However, students should not expect European standards. Library and study rooms are basic but totally
sufficient.
The
student community is very close and you find the smartest business students in
Asia among them. There are several clubs that offer extra-curricular
activities.
Sightseeing
Kolkata:
Hindi festivals; Kalighat temple; Flower market
Outside
of Kolkata: Himalayas, Delhi, Rajasthan, Goa, ….
Visa
As
a German citizen the visa process was pretty easy. After submission it took
only 8 days. No super special documents required. However, if visa period
exceeds 6 months, they might be pickier. Visa regulation for India will change
from 2015 (visa on arrival possible then)
Vaccines
Tetanus,
Diphtheria, Hepatitis A+B, Typhus, Meningococci (West Bengal is not a Malaria
area)
Surprises
It
is India, what shall I say …
